Copenhagen: The First Stop on Our European Cruise

Two days of walking, rain, and jet lag before setting sail

June 26, 2025

Copenhagen was the starting point for our European cruise and our first chance to get out and explore. We arrived on June 26, dropped our luggage off at the hotel, and started walking.

Colored buildings along waterfront

We didn’t have much of a plan for that first day. We wandered through the city, taking in the architecture, the bicycles, the waterfront, and the mix of old and new that seemed to be around every corner. After traveling overnight, walking was a good way to stay awake and get our first look at Copenhagen.

By late afternoon, the lack of sleep finally caught up with us. We headed back to the hotel and crashed. I thought that was the end of the day, but I woke up around 10 that night and decided to go back out with my camera.

It was raining by then, which gave the city a completely different look. The streets were darker and quieter, and the lights from the buildings, traffic signals, and cars reflected across the wet pavement. It turned into one of my favorite walks of the stop. Sometimes bad weather makes the better photographs.

After walking for a while in the rain, I went back to the hotel and finally called it a night.

One More Walk Before the Ship

We were up early the next morning and headed out again. Copenhagen felt different in the softer morning light. We had a few more hours to walk, photograph the streets, and enjoy the city before it was time to collect our luggage and make our way to the cruise terminal.

Our time in Copenhagen was short and mostly unplanned, but it was a great beginning to the trip. We saw the city in bright morning sun, in the rain at night, and once more under cloudy skies before boarding the ship that afternoon.
